Classification Summary: Incumbents plan and direct the activities of an athletic team. Responsibilities may include selecting and supervising coaching staff; planning and implementing practice sessions; recruiting student athletes; purchasing equipment and supplies; coordinating practices, games, transportation and lodging; scheduling game officials; monitoring the academic progress of athletes; managing a budget; promoting assigned programs; and preparing operational and financial reports.
Minimum Education and/or Training and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or a related field, and 3 years coaching experience in area of responsibility
Preferred Education and/or Training and Experience:
Licensing Requirements: CPR certification; Coaching license or certification from professional association
Classification Duties: 1. Instruct student athletes on specific sporting skills on an individual and/or team basis, which includes: determining most appropriate teaching method; providing athletes with adequate information on workouts, cross training, collegiate regulation compliance issues, and other applicable items; facilitating drills; reviewing videos; evaluating performance; and performing other related activities. (C4) 2. Provide guidance and leadership to other coaching staff. (C4) 3. Recruit student athletes and determines the academic probability of a student’s success by evaluating academic credentials, performance, and personality; offers scholarships to student athletes when probability of success meets specified criteria. (C4) 4. Develop students, both academically and athletically, by monitoring academic results and athletic achievements. (C4) 5. Coordinate travel, game/competition schedules, and practices by ensuring they are scheduled within their specific season’s timeframe. (B2) 6. Prepare sporting equipment for practices and games by ensuring equipment is properly handled and maintained at all times. (B2) 7. Monitor student athlete apartments, study halls, and academic performance; ensures student athlete compliance with set behavioral and eligibility requirements. (B2) 8. Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
